veil of zen

As the first rays of dawn kissed the cobblestone streets of a quaint village in Yorkshire, everything changed one fateful night. The sky lit up with a brilliant flash, casting an otherworldly glow over the landscape.

The villagers, startled from their slumber, rushed outside to witness the spectacle. Jim and Sue, members of the Stella Society, were among the first to react. Their curiosity about the mysteries of the universe was ignited like never before.

“Sue, look at that! It’s magnificent!” Jim exclaimed; his eyes wide with wonder.

“What was that?” Anita whispered, clutching Franco’s arm.

“I don’t know, but I have a feeling our lives are about to change,” he replied.

Elsewhere, young apprentices Anne, Recardo, Lola, and Dean were equally captivated by the phenomenon. They had been studying ancient artifacts with Doctor Mathews and Jane, unaware that their studies were about to take on a whole new significance.

The next morning, the village buzzed with speculation. People gathered in the town square, exchanging theories and rumours. “Maybe it was a meteor,” someone suggested. “Or perhaps an alien spaceship,” another added, their voice tinged with excitement.

Amid the chatter, two figures stood out. Zola and Jazzar, mysterious and enigmatic, watched the proceedings with keen interest. Their presence did not go unnoticed by the observant villagers.

As the villagers pondered the night’s events, the apprentices discovered something extraordinary. One of the ancient artifacts they had been studying began to glow with a faint, pulsating light.

“This can’t be a coincidence,” Dean murmured, his eyes locked on the artifact. “We need to find out what’s going on.”

With determination in their hearts and curiosity driving them forward, the apprentices, along with Jim, Sue, Anita, Franco, and the rest of the villagers, set out to uncover the truth. Little did they know, they were about to be drawn into a cosmic struggle that would test their courage, unity, and the very fabric of their existence.

The next morning, the town centre buzzed with excitement as a new sweet shop prepared for its grand opening. The heavenly aroma of confections filled the air, drawing crowds to the windows with its exotic, vibrant-coloured sweets displayed in magical containers.

Nearby, a luxurious cake shop served buns and cakes beyond imagination, some appearing to float until onlookers rubbed their eyes in disbelief. Both shops drew endless queues from morning till close, except for a brief respite between one and two for restocking.

Despite the charming appearances, Anita and Franco grew suspicious. William had been offering them treats from the sweet shop, gifts he received from his newfound friendships with the newcomers. They couldn’t shake the feeling that something sinister was afoot.h.

One day, young apprentices Ann, Recardo, Lola, and Dean met with William.

“Hi, William.”

“Hi, gang.ingredient in the buns? And what have you found out about your shop’s management?”

Initially reluctant to answer, over the weeks, as trust began to form, the apprentices shared their concerns with William. They even invited the group to a free stargazing convention next week.

With trust established, the young people revealed what they’d discovered. They suspected that the shop owner was suppressing some sort of memories, occasionally going into a trance.

Amidst the excitement, talk spread about two people who had disappeared. Anita and Franco were on a mission to expose the truth, and they bumped into William and his apprentices. They exchanged stories about the convention. As the event went on, astronomers from around the world brought a buzz of excitement, generating money for the town and extra income for the apprentices.

Little did they know, the mystery was not in the sky but right under their noses. Lola accidentally spilled some moon beans and stardust on the floor, and Dean helped her clean up while Ann and Recardo sold confectioneries at another table. As the day went on, the sparkles of stardust emitted some kind of signal.

.

Before that day, they had been warned not to eat too many samples, but they hadn’t taken it seriously. The shop owners told them not to worry and that their hair would return to normal. They mentioned something about “number twenty-seven” and “up to forty” being important.

“It’s some sort of energy field,” he murmured, eyes wide.

Before they could respond, two figures emerged from the hallway—Jane and Doctor Mathew.

“We’re not from this world,” Doctor Mathew said calmly, as if announcing the weather.

Lola, Dean, Ann, and Ricardo, who had followed them from the convention, froze. They’d seen Doctor Mathew’s face before—on a faded photo behind the shop counter.

“You live in apartment twenty-seven, right?” he continued. “That place is special. Its where liquid colour is transferred into minds. The storm is intensifying it.”

William turned pale. “Transferred?”

“Think about it,” Jane added. “Your consciousness has been layered —human, yes, but threaded with something older.”

Outside, the chaos hadn’t stopped. People’s hair had turned silver, then grey, then back again. Panic rippled through the streets, but beneath it, something deeper stirred: memories long buried, surfacing like mist.

Days later, Lola discovered the till’s black button—pressing it twice revealed hidden words. With Dean’s help, she planned to return to the shop and uncover the truth.

The shop owners had vanished.

Jim and Sue were in shock as they stepped outside, shielded by the police from a frenzied media mob. Reporters bombarded them with questions: “How did you vanish and where did you go?” “Were you abducted by aliens?” “What do you know?” “Why did you return and how?”

Overwhelmed and unsure how to respond, they stood silently as the police intervened, giving them a moment to breathe and collect their thoughts. Doctor Mathews and Jane approached; their expressions intense.

“Have you experienced any intergalactic encounters?” they asked.

Jim and Sue could not remember, their memories foggy. “A cosmic glitch might have caused temporary memory loss,” Doctor Mathews suggested.

“How do you know?” Jim asked, his voice trembling. Sue looked at him, fear in her eyes.

“We suspect you’re not from this planet,” Doctor Mathews replied calmly.

“We’re Yorkshire born and bred!” Jim exclaimed, trying to laugh it off.

“You just can’t remember yet,” Jane said, her tone unsettling.

Days later, the idea seemed laughable. “Us, aliens? As if,” Jim joked. But soon, without warning, they were whisked away to a secret location for questioning. The media trailed behind, but they lost them in a high-speed chase. Sue gripped the steering wheel, adrenaline pumping, as they narrowly avoided oncoming traffic and swerved past a lorry.

The road narrowed, leading them to an off-the-chart, abandoned warehouse area. The people they thought were police officers revealed their true intentions. Inside the warehouse, they were greeted with special signals and nods. A commanding voice echoed, “Welcome back, commanders.”

Jim and Sue were stunned as holographic images of an unfamiliar world played before their eyes. Encased behind a veil not yet ready to be lifted, the truth began to unravel. Doctor Mathews and Jane revealed themselves as shapeshifters on a mission to observe Earth.

.

“You’re here to observe Earth as unseen observers,” Doctor Mathews explained. “We can disappear at will. It’s all about controlling human minds.”

They stepped outside to find a gardener tending to lush gardens. “Why would you make our land flourish?” Sue asked, bewildered.

“Let’s take a walk,” Jane suggested. “If we live as humans, we need the energy from your land. Your memory loss was to prevent you from revealing anything at the stargazing event. You’ve been human for some time. We had to wait to bring you back and restore your memories.”

“Oh my god,” Jim whispered, realization dawning.

Jim and Sue had to stay until their memories returned so they could report back to their home planet..

Over the days, they were given small chunks of information. They had to stay, not only for themselves but because the shop owners had a surprising twist.

Further outside, under the cover of night, flowers flourished, and crops grew lush. The shop owners returned, stabilizing everything for now. Little did people know that a shimmering portal to the cosmic world would soon open, but who would go through?

The Ripple Effect: Unseen Forces

Memories surfaced of lives intertwined, revealing a network of shared experiences. In Anita’s apartment block, the energies were electrifying. Everything they touched seemed to emit an energy field, glowing eerily in the dark, much like the sweet treats in the shop window.

As the floodwaters began to recede slightly, the glow persisted, a reminder of the extraordinary events unfolding. The screams of children echoed around, adding to the chaos. Everyone had to wait, trapped by the high waters. Beyond the motorway, helicopters hovered, reporting the disaster. The only thing they could do was wait and hope that scientists could work out a solution.

The alien bodies submerged in the water were perplexed by the ripple effect and yearned for a return to human form. The blueprint for other lives became visible to humans as they clung to anything they could find, memories of interconnected lives surfacing.

The following day brought new challenges as they required the army’s help. The ripple effect of the water was not just physical but metaphysical, altering perceptions and realities. As the situation unfolded, the unseen observers took note, understanding the gravity of the cosmic glitch and the intertwined destinies of humans and aliens.

One month on, humans walked around as though the events never happened. Was it a mass memory loss? For some humans or aliens living amongst them, it was unclear. Or perhaps, it was simply those originally from underground, where artifacts were left. The veil remained uplifted.

Further away, the apprentices—Ann, Richardo, Lola, and Dean—who had experienced levitation of objects in short bursts, found they could now connect in dreams.

Living not far from each other, they met up and realized they had insight into something they thought were mere dreams. But the feeling of being watched by unseen observers was too much of a coincidence to ignore.

They wondered why their bedroom windows were open and objects knocked off shelves. They discussed their next steps at the sweet shops, which were open with the owners’ help. The owners seemed normal, though quieter than usual. Just before closing for restock, a man walked into each of the sweet shops.

The apprentices tried to close the doors, but the men struck up conversations: “So I see you are learning your trade along with your chosen friends. You cannot live as humans anymore.”

The apprentices turned to run, but the shop owners intervened, pushing them aside.

“What do you want, Zola? Isn’t it time you went back to Zen?” one owner said.

“I see your memory has returned. Leave the apprentices alone,” Zola replied.

The apprentices, called to one shop, used their powers to levitate equipment, while others distracted and knocked out the men with the shop owners’ ray activators.

“We chose you because you are apprentices from Zen, our home planet,” the owners explained. “You were born human, but originally, you were born in Zen. Your mothers were used to see if we could control humans, to shape-shift. You all can do this. Your mothers are aliens, and your fathers are human. Zola here doesn’t believe we can live in harmony.

Amongst the confusion, people saw and heard what they believed were British aircraft, but the unseen observers knew differently. Zoe and Pop, two stargazers, turned up in town, now revealing themselves as scientists. They met in secret, hidden from the media, but the army was on to the aliens.

After the floods and storm damage, people were confused and hospitals overrun. The army took the chosen ones back into town, aiming to bring them to safety before another species, the Drakes, tried to take them. The resistance was breaking the seal, and everything was under a veil. The scientists broadcast a message:

“Unseen observers are observing us. You will come to realize that you humans have been living on a planet called Zen, which is in fact your planet. You invaded Earth, but we are a generous species, allowing you to live amongst us. We look and sound like you, but you would have started noticing differences. We are living under a veil that cannot be lifted until harmony is restored. No need to be afraid—you have been here for years. We cannot risk lifting the veil until we find out who is observing us. We believe another species may select people to go aboard their ships to be the guardians of their galaxy. First, we must prepare for this encounter. We will transmit another day.”

Dean, Anne, Recardo, and Lola had formed a resistance group with a few others. They met a journalist who was determined to get on the spaceship, whether by lottery or by force.

Jazeer, confident he would be chosen, couldn’t explain how he knew. The artifacts might have drawn the attention of the creators. Jazeer and Pop’s secret identities as aliens were exposed the day, they entered the shops.

The journalist, aware that chosen individuals might not return, revealed his plan. He intended to smuggle special ingredients harmful to the Drakes within baked goods, hoping to trigger allergic reactions.

Hidden within his bag were communication devices, ensuring they could stay in touch with the resistance on Earth. Armed with moon beans mixed with other ingredients, he hoped the Drakes would think it was food from their home planet.

The resistance knew they might be called upon to board the aircraft via the lottery. They were warned that ray guns would be ineffective and wouldn’t pass the guard structure, forcing them to abandon the idea of using weapons. The anticipation built as the day of the aircraft’s arrival approached. Earth, Zen, and the new Earth—no one knew what awaited them. What would the lottery hold, and would they be able to return freely? These questions went unanswered.

Some people, especially those without homes, were eager for their names to be chosen. Those whose hair had turned grey felt special, as if this was their chance for a new life with food and shelter.

Time for the Big Lottery

The final boarding call was announced. As people entered the interstellar plane equipped with modern technology, they were assigned seats. Odd questions about age, size, and weight raised suspicions.

“Surely the plane can take us,” the journalist commented, determined to uncover the truth.

Anita, who was among the chosen, called the journalist over, sensing something was wrong. She began coughing, signalling distress. Each person held a special ticket with symbols instead of numbers. Symbols or numbers flashed on big screens for days, and those with the number twenty-seven were allowed to board.

The massive ship, though resembling a large plane, was silent inside. Among the crew stood a huge figure, the curator.

“We have a special selection tonight,” he announced with a sinister smile.

“What do you mean?” someone asked.

“Firstly, welcome aboard,” the curator said. The dimly lit aircraft filled with unease. “We must collect specimens.”

Realization dawned on the crew as they saw the book in the curator’s hands, not a guide to artifacts but a catalogue of living beings. They were the next entries. Horror struck as the crew saw illustrations of tigers, elephants, and now, themselves.

Mid-flight, everything seemed in slow motion. Each breath quickened as the lights revealed encased species. They feared they might be next, encased in glass. The curator’s smile broadened, and the machinery hummed ominously in the background.

The Plan in Motion

As the hours passed, passengers began displaying flu-like symptoms due to the cramped seating. Realizing the situation, they quickly passed around makeup to create red blotches, simulating illness. In hushed tones, they urged each other to act quickly. The rumour of a flu outbreak spread to the curators, who decided they couldn’t use the passengers as specimens.

Back on Earth, the resistance monitored the situation. They knew they had to act fast to rescue their friends.

Coordinating with the communication devices hidden in the journalist’s bag, they began formulating a new plan. Jazeer and Pop, leveraging their alien knowledge, suggested using the ship’s own technology against the Drakes. They identified a way to disrupt the ship’s systems, causing confusion and stalling for the resistance to execute their rescue mission.

As night fell, the resistance on Earth made their move. Using the information relayed by the journalist, they hacked into the ship’s communication system, sending false alerts and creating chaos among the Drakes.

With the Drakes distracted, the resistance group onboard the ship sprang into action. They used the moon beans mixed with other ingredients to incapacitate the Drakes, while the journalist activated the communication devices to guide their escape.

The final moments were tense. With time running out, the resistance members fought their way to the ship’s control room, disabling the curators and taking over the ship. The ship descended back to Earth, the veil lifted, and a new dawn of understanding between humans and aliens began.

The ship landed to a chorus of cheers and relief. The villagers of Yorkshire, who had gathered under the twinkling night sky, welcomed the returning heroes. Their village, now an epicentre of an alliance between humans and aliens, marked the beginning of a new era. Trust had been evaluated and proven. The alliance between humans and the aliens of Zen brought hope for a future of peace and cooperation.

The Drakes, seeing the strength and unity of the resistance, agreed to work together to ensure the safety of both planets. The apprentices—Dean, Anne, Recardo, and Lola—embraced their roles as ambassadors, vowing to protect their home and continue their training. The journalist’s story became legendary, a testament to the power of courage and unity.

As the villagers celebrated, the night sky shimmered with the promise of a bright future. Humans and aliens, once separated by fear and misunderstanding, now stood together, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
