Emily didn’t expect to see Claire again so soon.
But somehow she knew it would happen.
Claire wasn’t the type of person who started something and walked away.
She finished things.
Always.
Emily had learned that much already.
Especially after the conversation from Chapter 7 – The Lie Daniel Never Denied.
Claire had been watching the entire situation unfold like a quiet observer.
Almost like a scientist studying an experiment.
And Emily hated that feeling.
Because experiments eventually reach a conclusion.
1
The message came at 6:12 PM.
It was short.
Just like all of Claire’s messages.
Claire:
Let’s talk.
Emily stared at the screen.
Her first instinct was to ignore it.
Her second instinct was to block Claire entirely.
But curiosity had become stronger than fear.
So Emily replied.
Emily:
About what?
Three dots appeared instantly.
Claire was typing.
Claire:
About the part Daniel didn’t tell you.
Emily felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
There were still things Daniel hadn’t said.
That part wasn’t surprising.
What was surprising was that Claire seemed eager to reveal them.
Emily:
Where?
Claire’s answer came immediately.
Claire:
The same café.
Emily stared at the message.
The café where she first met Daniel.
The café from Chapter 1 – The Man with the Wedding Ring.
The place that now felt less like coincidence and more like the beginning of something carefully planned.
Emily hesitated for exactly thirty seconds.
Then she typed:
Emily:
Fine.
2
The café was quieter than usual that evening.
Rain had started falling lightly outside, making the city feel slower.
Emily arrived first.
She chose the same table where she had met Daniel months ago.
The same chair.
The same view of the door.
For a moment she wondered if Claire would notice that detail.
Of course she would.
Claire noticed everything.
Exactly seven minutes later, Claire walked in.
Emily knew it was her before even looking up.
There was something about Claire’s presence that filled a room without trying.
Calm.
Controlled.
Unbothered.
Claire approached the table slowly and sat down across from Emily.
Neither of them spoke at first.
Finally Claire smiled slightly.
“You look tired.”
Emily crossed her arms.
“I didn’t sleep.”
“That makes sense.”
“Why?”
Claire stirred the spoon in her coffee.
“Because truth tends to do that.”
3
Emily leaned forward slightly.
“You told me Daniel knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“And he confirmed it.”
Claire nodded.
“I assumed he would.”
Emily studied her carefully.
“Why did you tell him about me in the first place?”
Claire raised an eyebrow.
“I was curious.”
“About what?”
Claire’s smile returned, small and unreadable.
“You.”
Emily almost laughed.
“That’s not a reason.”
“It is for me.”
Emily shook her head.
“You’re playing games.”
Claire took a slow sip of coffee.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“If I were playing games,” Claire said calmly, “I wouldn’t be explaining the rules.”
Emily remembered that sentence immediately.
It echoed something Claire had said earlier in Chapter 4 – The Rules Claire Set.
Claire liked rules.
But more importantly—
She liked when other people realized they were already inside them.
4
Emily took a breath.
“Daniel said there were other women.”
Claire nodded casually.
“There were.”
“How many?”
Claire tilted her head slightly.
“Does the number matter?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Emily frowned.
“Why not?”
Claire placed her cup down.
“Because numbers make people think they understand patterns.”
Emily blinked.
“You talk about patterns a lot.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“That’s because people repeat them constantly.”
Emily remembered Daniel saying the exact same thing in Chapter 6 – The Night Claire Called.
Claire and Daniel shared more than just a marriage.
They shared the same strange way of analyzing human behavior.
Emily leaned closer.
“So what pattern am I?”
Claire’s eyes held hers calmly.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
5
Emily felt anger rising again.
“I’m not part of your experiment.”
Claire didn’t react.
“You already are.”
“I didn’t agree to that.”
Claire shrugged slightly.
“Most people don’t.”
Emily stared at her.
“You’re unbelievable.”
Claire didn’t argue.
Instead she asked quietly:
“Did Daniel tell you about the first woman?”
Emily froze.
“The first woman?”
Claire nodded.
“The first one after me.”
Emily felt a knot tighten in her stomach.
“No.”
Claire’s smile faded slightly.
“I thought he might skip that part.”
Emily leaned forward again.
“What happened to her?”
Claire watched her carefully before answering.
“She fell in love with him.”
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“That doesn’t sound unusual.”
Claire tilted her head slightly.
“No.”
“It happens often.”
Emily frowned.
“Then why does she matter?”
Claire’s voice lowered just a little.
“Because she believed he would leave me.”
Emily waited.
“And he didn’t.”
6
Emily felt a chill run down her spine.
“So she left him.”
Claire shook her head slowly.
“No.”
Emily blinked.
“Then what happened?”
Claire paused before answering.
“She stayed.”
Emily stared at her.
“For how long?”
Claire smiled faintly again.
“Long enough to realize something.”
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“What?”
Claire looked directly at her.
“That loving Daniel is the easiest part.”
Emily felt her heartbeat speeding up.
“And the hard part?”
Claire answered calmly.
“Understanding him.”
7
Emily leaned back in her chair.
“That sounds dramatic.”
Claire shrugged.
“It’s accurate.”
Emily studied her carefully.
“You talk about Daniel like he’s some kind of puzzle.”
Claire smiled slightly.
“He is.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“He’s just a man who cheats.”
Claire didn’t look offended.
Instead she asked softly:
“Then why are you still here?”
Emily didn’t have an answer.
Because Claire was right.
If Daniel was just another cheating man—
Emily should have walked away already.
But she hadn’t.
And that was the part Claire seemed most interested in.
8
Claire glanced at Emily’s phone on the table.
“Does he know you’re here?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Claire nodded.
“Good.”
Emily frowned.
“Why good?”
Claire leaned forward slightly.
“Because Daniel behaves differently when he feels watched.”
Emily felt another wave of unease.
“You study him like a scientist.”
Claire smiled faintly again.
“Ten years of marriage gives you a lot of data.”
Emily folded her arms.
“So what’s your conclusion?”
Claire didn’t answer right away.
Instead she asked something unexpected.
“Emily, do you believe people can change?”
Emily hesitated.
“Sometimes.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“I used to believe that too.”
Emily’s stomach tightened again.
“Used to?”
Claire looked at her calmly.
“Yes.”
“What changed your mind?”
Claire held her gaze.
“Daniel.”
9
The rain outside the café had become heavier now.
People rushed past the windows with umbrellas.
Inside, the world felt strangely quiet.
Emily finally asked the question that had been building in her mind.
“Why haven’t you left him?”
Claire didn’t look surprised.
“Most people ask that eventually.”
“And your answer?”
Claire smiled faintly again.
“Because leaving would ruin the experiment.”
Emily stared at her.
“You’re serious.”
Claire nodded.
“Completely.”
Emily felt a mix of anger and disbelief.
“So you stay married to a cheating husband just to observe him?”
Claire tilted her head slightly.
“That’s one way to describe it.”
Emily leaned closer.
“And the other way?”
Claire’s eyes darkened slightly.
“The more accurate way.”
Emily waited.
Claire said quietly:
“I stay because I want to know if someone will finally break the pattern.”
10
Emily felt something shift inside her chest.
“You think that someone might be me.”
Claire didn’t deny it.
“Possibly.”
Emily shook her head.
“That’s insane.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“Maybe.”
“But it’s also interesting.”
Emily stood up suddenly.
“I’m not part of your story.”
Claire watched her without moving.
“You already are.”
Emily grabbed her phone.
“I’m leaving.”
Claire nodded slightly.
“That’s what the others did too.”
Emily stopped.
Her heart began beating faster again.
“What do you mean?”
Claire spoke softly.
“They all leave at this stage.”
Emily turned slowly.
“This stage?”
Claire looked at her calmly.
“The moment they realize the truth isn’t about Daniel.”
Emily frowned.
“Then what is it about?”
Claire held her gaze for a long moment before answering.
“It’s about you.”
Emily felt a cold chill spread through her chest.
Because suddenly—
She wasn’t sure Claire was wrong.
