Between Us and the Lie
Chapter 9: The First Woman
The rain hadn’t stopped when Emily stepped out of the café.
It had only gotten heavier.
Cold droplets hit her skin, soaking through her clothes almost instantly, but she didn’t move toward shelter.
She just stood there.
Still.
Trying to breathe.
Trying to understand what Claire had just said.
“They all leave at this stage.”
The sentence replayed in her head over and over again.
Like a loop she couldn’t turn off.
Because it wasn’t just what Claire said—
It was how she said it.
Calm.
Certain.
Like she had already seen this exact moment happen before.
1
Emily started walking without thinking.
The streets blurred past her, lights reflecting off the wet pavement, people rushing by, cars passing too fast.
None of it felt real.
All she could hear was Claire’s voice.
“The truth isn’t about Daniel.”
“It’s about you.”
Emily stopped abruptly at a crosswalk.
Her phone vibrated in her hand.
She didn’t need to check.
She already knew who it was.
Daniel.
Of course.
She looked down.
Daniel (3 missed calls)
Daniel: Where are you?
Another message appeared.
Daniel: We need to talk.
Emily let out a quiet breath.
That sentence again.
We need to talk.
The same sentence that had started everything back in Chapter 2 – When the Lie Began to Crack.
Back then, it had felt urgent.
Now, it felt… predictable.
Emily didn’t reply.
Instead, she turned off her phone.
2
She didn’t go home.
Not right away.
Instead, she found herself walking toward a place she hadn’t visited in weeks.
The building looked the same.
Old.
Slightly worn.
Familiar in a way that made her chest tighten.
Daniel’s apartment.
Emily stood across the street, staring up at the windows.
One of them was lit.
He was home.
Of course he was.
She remembered the first time she had come here.
The way her heart had raced.
The way everything had felt new, uncertain, dangerous.
That moment from Chapter 1 – The Man with the Wedding Ring.
Now?
It felt different.
He wasn’t a mystery anymore.
Not entirely.
But somehow—
That made everything more complicated.
3
Emily crossed the street.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
She didn’t knock.
She used the key.
The one Daniel had given her weeks ago.
The door opened quietly.
Inside, the apartment was dim.
Warm light from a single lamp filled the living room.
And there he was.
Daniel.
Standing by the window.
Waiting.
He turned the moment he heard the door.
Relief flashed across his face.
“Emily.”
She didn’t move.
Didn’t step closer.
Didn’t smile.
“You turned off your phone,” he said.
“I needed silence.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That makes sense.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The tension in the room felt different tonight.
Not sharp.
Not explosive.
Just… heavy.
4
Emily broke the silence first.
“I saw Claire.”
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
Not surprise.
Not anger.
Something else.
Something more complicated.
“What did she tell you?”
Emily let out a quiet breath.
“She told me about the first woman.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Like he had expected this.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“I was going to tell you,” he said quietly.
Emily shook her head.
“No, you weren’t.”
Daniel didn’t argue.
“Tell me now,” Emily said.
He hesitated.
That hesitation said everything.
And yet—
He still spoke.
5
“Her name was Sophie.”
The name felt strangely soft.
Gentle.
Like it didn’t belong in a story like this.
“She worked at the same company as me,” Daniel continued.
“We met during a project. Late nights. Deadlines. The usual.”
Emily didn’t interrupt.
She had heard this kind of story before.
It always started the same way.
“But it didn’t stay usual,” Daniel added.
Emily let out a quiet, humorless laugh.
“Of course it didn’t.”
Daniel ignored the tone.
“She was different.”
Emily raised an eyebrow.
“They’re always different.”
Daniel looked at her directly.
“She didn’t know about Claire at first.”
Emily felt something twist inside her chest.
“Of course she didn’t.”
“That part is my fault,” Daniel admitted.
Emily crossed her arms.
“So what happened?”
Daniel hesitated again.
Then said:
“She fell in love with me.”
6
Emily stared at him.
“That’s not the interesting part.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“So tell me the part Claire didn’t explain,” Emily said.
Daniel looked away.
Toward the window.
Toward the rain.
“She didn’t leave when she found out about Claire.”
Emily’s heartbeat slowed slightly.
Claire had said the same thing.
“She stayed,” Emily said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And for the first time—
He looked unsure.
7
“Because she believed something,” he said finally.
Emily waited.
“She believed I would choose her.”
Emily felt a sharp, almost painful recognition.
Because that belief—
That hope—
It wasn’t unfamiliar.
“And did you?” Emily asked.
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“No.”
The word landed heavily between them.
“Did you ever plan to?” Emily pressed.
Daniel stayed silent.
And that silence—
It was answer enough.
8
Emily let out a slow breath.
“So what happened to her?”
Daniel hesitated again.
But this time, it was different.
He wasn’t just choosing words.
He was choosing how much truth to reveal.
“She changed,” he said.
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“She stopped asking questions.”
Emily blinked.
“That doesn’t sound like change.”
“It is,” Daniel said quietly.
9
Emily felt something shift.
“Explain.”
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“At first, she wanted answers.”
Emily nodded slowly.
“Of course.”
“She wanted clarity. Commitment. A decision.”
Emily’s voice softened slightly.
“That’s normal.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he added:
“But then she stopped.”
Emily frowned.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time—
There was something close to regret in his eyes.
“Because she realized something.”
Emily’s voice dropped.
“What?”
Daniel said quietly:
“That I wasn’t going to change.”
10
The room felt colder.
Even though nothing had changed.
Emily looked away.
Toward the table.
Toward the empty glass beside it.
“So she gave up.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Emily looked back at him.
“Then what?”
Daniel’s voice was almost a whisper.
“She adapted.”
11
Emily felt a chill run down her spine.
“Adapted how?”
Daniel took a breath.
“She stayed… but differently.”
Emily’s heart began to beat faster.
“Differently?”
Daniel nodded.
“She stopped trying to be the one I would choose.”
Emily stared at him.
“And what did she become?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“She became someone who didn’t need to be chosen.”
12
The words hit harder than Emily expected.
Because they didn’t sound like defeat.
They sounded like transformation.
“And you stayed with her?” Emily asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Emily frowned.
“Then why does she matter?”
Daniel looked at her carefully.
“Because she was the only one who didn’t break.”
Emily’s breath caught slightly.
“Everyone else leaves,” Daniel added.
Emily remembered Claire’s words from Chapter 8 – The Night Emily Meets Claire Again.
“They all leave at this stage.”
13
Emily stepped back slightly.
“So where is she now?”
Daniel hesitated again.
Longer this time.
“I don’t know.”
Emily narrowed her eyes.
“That’s a lie.”
Daniel didn’t argue.
“You do know,” Emily said.
Silence.
“Daniel.”
He finally spoke.
“I saw her last week.”
14
Emily’s stomach dropped.
“Last week?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked at her.
“At the café.”
Emily froze.
The same café.
The same place from Chapter 1 – The Man with the Wedding Ring
The same place from Chapter 8 – The Night Emily Meets Claire Again
Nothing about that felt like coincidence anymore.
15
Emily’s voice turned cold.
“And you didn’t think to mention that?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Of course you didn’t,” Emily said.
She turned away, pacing slightly.
Trying to think.
Trying to connect everything.
Claire.
Daniel.
Sophie.
The café.
It all felt connected.
Too connected.
16
“Did Claire know?” Emily asked suddenly.
Daniel looked up.
“Yes.”
Emily let out a sharp breath.
“Of course she did.”
Everything made sense now.
Claire wasn’t just observing Emily.
She had already seen this before.
With Sophie.
And maybe—
With others too.
17
Emily stopped pacing.
Turned back to Daniel.
“Why am I here?”
Daniel frowned slightly.
“What do you mean?”
Emily stepped closer.
“Why me?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence—
It felt heavier than anything else.
18
“Say it,” Emily said quietly.
Daniel looked at her.
Really looked this time.
“You’re different.”
Emily almost laughed.
“There it is.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I mean it.”
Emily’s voice hardened.
“So did you with her?”
Daniel didn’t respond.
19
Emily stepped back.
Her chest felt tight again.
Everything Claire said.
Everything Daniel said.
It all pointed to the same thing.
This wasn’t new.
She wasn’t special.
She wasn’t different.
She was just—
The next version of the same story.
20
Emily grabbed her coat.
“I’m done.”
Daniel moved forward quickly.
“Emily, wait.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Just listen—”
“I have listened,” she snapped.
The room fell silent again.
21
Emily looked at him one last time.
“I think Claire was right.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Emily continued:
“This isn’t about you.”
He didn’t speak.
“It’s about me,” she said quietly.
22
Emily walked toward the door.
Her hand on the handle.
Then she stopped.
“Tell me one thing,” she said without turning.
Daniel waited.
“If Sophie walked in here right now…”
She paused.
“Would you choose her?”
The silence that followed—
It said everything.
Emily closed her eyes briefly.
Then opened the door.
And left.
23
Outside, the rain had finally stopped.
The air felt different.
Lighter.
Colder.
Clearer.
Emily walked slowly this time.
Not lost.
Not confused.
Just… thinking.
24
Because now she understood something important.
This wasn’t a love triangle.
It was a pattern.
And patterns—
Only exist until someone breaks them.
