Between Us and the Lie Chapter 5: The First Rule We Break

Emily tried to follow Claire’s rules.

At least, that’s what she told herself.

The list Claire had sent the night before was still sitting in Emily’s phone like a quiet threat.

Rule One:
No messages after midnight.

Rule Two:
No secrets.

Rule Three:
If you stay in his life, you stay where I can see you.

Emily had read those lines at least twenty times.

Each time they felt less like rules…

And more like a challenge.

1

The café was nearly empty that afternoon.

Emily chose the table in the corner, the one near the window where the light made everything look softer.

Safer.

She told herself she was here for coffee.

Not for Daniel.

But she still checked the door every few minutes.

He was late.

Daniel was never late.

That alone made her nervous.

Her phone buzzed.

For a second her heart jumped.

But it wasn’t him.

Just a message from Claire.

Emily stared at the screen before opening it.

Claire:
I assume he told you about the rules.

Emily hesitated.

Then typed.

Emily:
Yes.

Three dots appeared instantly.

Claire was waiting.

Watching.

Claire:
Good.

A pause.

Then another message.

Claire:
You’ll find they’re very simple to follow.

Emily swallowed.

She almost asked the question that had been stuck in her head since last night.

Why are you doing this?

But she didn’t.

Instead she wrote:

Emily:
I’m not trying to hurt you.

The typing dots appeared again.

Then stopped.

Then appeared again.

Finally Claire replied.

Claire:
You already did.

2

Daniel arrived ten minutes later.

He looked different today.

More tired.

More careful.

Like a man walking through a room full of glass.

He sat across from Emily without speaking.

For a moment neither of them touched their coffee.

Finally Emily said quietly,

“You told her everything?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Not everything.”

“That’s not what it sounded like.”

“She knew enough already.”

Emily studied him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel sighed.

“It means Claire isn’t stupid.”

The way he said it made Emily uneasy.

Like there were parts of the story she still didn’t understand.

“Why did she set rules?” Emily asked.

Daniel gave a small humorless laugh.

“That’s her way of staying in control.”

“Control of what?”

“Of me.”

He looked up at her.

“And now you.”

3

Emily looked down at her coffee.

Claire’s message echoed in her mind.

If you stay in his life, you stay where I can see you.

“She wants to watch us,” Emily said slowly.

Daniel nodded.

“That’s Claire.”

“That’s not normal.”

“No,” he said. “It isn’t.”

A quiet tension settled between them.

Emily finally asked the question she had been avoiding.

“Why didn’t you leave her?”

Daniel didn’t answer right away.

Outside the window, people passed by like ordinary life was still happening somewhere.

Finally he said,

“It’s complicated.”

Emily almost laughed.

“That’s the most married-man answer you could give.”

Daniel looked at her seriously.

“I mean it.”

“So explain.”

He leaned back in the chair.

“You think Claire is trying to keep me,” he said.

Emily frowned.

“Isn’t she?”

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“She’s trying to test you.”

4

Emily blinked.

“Test me?”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s how she works.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

He leaned forward slightly.

“Claire believes something very specific about people.”

Emily crossed her arms.

“What?”

Daniel met her eyes.

“That if you give someone permission to lie…”

“They eventually tell the truth.”

Emily stared at him.

“That’s insane.”

Daniel shrugged.

“Maybe.”

“But that’s what she’s doing.”

Emily thought about the rules again.

No messages after midnight.

No secrets.

Stay where I can see you.

They weren’t rules.

They were traps.

5

Emily’s phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Claire.

Emily felt a chill before opening it.

Claire:
Is he there?

Emily looked up at Daniel.

He watched her carefully.

“What did she say?”

Emily turned the phone so he could see.

Daniel sighed.

“She’s checking.”

Emily hesitated.

“What should I say?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

For the first time since they met, he looked uncertain.

Finally he said,

“Tell her the truth.”

Emily typed.

Emily:
Yes.

Three dots appeared immediately.

Claire was definitely watching.

Then the reply came.

Claire:
Good.

A second message followed.

Claire:
Then let’s see how long it takes before you break the first rule.

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?” she whispered.

Daniel already knew.

“She’s waiting,” he said quietly.

“For what?”

“For midnight.”

6

Emily went home early that evening.

Her apartment felt too quiet.

Too empty.

She kept thinking about Claire’s last message.

Let’s see how long it takes.

Like the whole situation was some kind of experiment.

At 11:37 PM, Emily was still awake.

Her phone lay on the nightstand.

Silent.

She told herself she wouldn’t text Daniel.

That would prove Claire wrong.

11:45.

11:52.

11:58.

Her screen lit up.

Daniel.

Daniel:
Are you awake?

Emily stared at the message.

Midnight was two minutes away.

She didn’t answer.

Another message appeared.

Daniel:
Emily.

Her heart started beating faster.

The clock changed.

12:00 AM

Rule one had officially begun.

No messages after midnight.

Her phone buzzed again.

Daniel:
I can’t stop thinking about you.

Emily closed her eyes.

This was exactly what Claire wanted.

A test.

A trap.

She put the phone face down.

Tried to sleep.

Thirty seconds passed.

Her phone buzzed again.

She flipped it over before she could stop herself.

One more message from Daniel.

Just two words.

Daniel:
Please respond.

7

Emily sat up in bed.

Her mind was racing.

If she answered, she broke the rule.

If she didn’t…

She wasn’t sure what that meant.

Her phone buzzed again.

But this time the message wasn’t from Daniel.

It was from Claire.

Emily felt a cold shiver as she opened it.

Claire:
Midnight.

A pause.

Then another message.

Claire:
Tick tock.

Emily’s chest tightened.

Claire wasn’t just waiting.

She was watching the moment happen.

Another message arrived.

From Daniel.

Daniel:
Emily, talk to me.

Emily looked from Daniel’s message to Claire’s.

Two conversations.

Two sides of the same trap.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

And then—

She typed.

Emily:
You shouldn’t text me right now.

She hit send.

12:03 AM.

The first rule was broken.

8

The response came immediately.

But not from Daniel.

From Claire.

Claire:
There it is.

Emily felt her stomach drop.

Claire had been waiting for that exact moment.

Another message appeared.

Claire:
Rule One: broken.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then another message.

Claire:
Now the interesting part begins.

Emily whispered to herself,

“What does that mean?”

As if hearing her, Claire sent one final message.

Claire:
Because once someone breaks the first rule…

Three dots appeared.

Paused.

Then the final line arrived.

Claire:
They always break the rest.

Emily looked at Daniel’s unanswered messages.

Then back at Claire’s.

For the first time since meeting Daniel…

She felt something she hadn’t expected.

Fear.
