Between Us and the Lie Chapter 7: The Lie Daniel Never Denied

Emily didn’t sleep at all.

Claire’s last sentence kept repeating in her head like a whisper she couldn’t turn off.

I introduced him to you.

At first Emily told herself it was manipulation.

Claire was smart.

Too smart.

She knew how to plant doubt.

But the longer Emily lay awake staring at the ceiling, the more the memory of that first meeting began to change.

The café.

The book.

Daniel recommending that novel so casually.

Emily sat up suddenly.

Her phone lay beside her pillow.

For the first time since the affair began, she was afraid to ask Daniel a question.

Because she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear the answer.

But the question refused to leave her mind.

Finally, at 3:12 AM, she typed a message.

Emily:
Did you know who I was when we met?

She stared at the screen.

Three minutes passed.

Then ten.

Then twenty.

No answer.

Which was strange.

Daniel almost always replied instantly.

Unless—

He was thinking.

1

Morning arrived slowly.

Gray light spilled through Emily’s apartment window, making everything feel dull and heavy.

Her phone still showed no reply.

But at 8:47 AM, Daniel finally called.

Emily answered immediately.

“Tell me she’s lying,” she said.

Daniel didn’t speak right away.

That silence was worse than any answer.

“Daniel.”

He exhaled slowly.

“Where are you?”

“That’s not the question.”

“Emily—”

“Did you know who I was?”

Another long pause.

Emily’s heart started pounding harder.

Finally Daniel said quietly:

“I knew your name.”

Emily felt her stomach drop.

“Only my name?”

“Yes.”

“That’s still not nothing.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead on the other end of the call.

“I didn’t know anything else about you.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You just happened to meet me in the exact café Claire likes.”

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“And you recommended her favorite book.”

Still no denial.

Emily felt anger rising.

“So Claire told you to approach me.”

“No,” Daniel said quickly.

“She didn’t tell me to do anything.”

“Then how did you know who I was?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said the words Emily had been dreading.

“She mentioned you once.”

2

Emily stood up so quickly the chair behind her scraped loudly across the floor.

“Mentioned me?”

“Yes.”

“In what context?”

Daniel’s voice sounded tired now.

“We were talking about people she meets at work.”

Emily’s mind raced.

Claire worked in publishing.

Books.

Authors.

Editors.

Emily had met Claire months before the affair started at a networking event.

They had exchanged exactly two polite sentences.

“You’re telling me she remembered me from that?” Emily said.

“Yes.”

“And told you my name?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.”

Emily pressed her hand against the wall.

“So when we met…”

“You recognized my name,” she finished.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Which was the same as confirming it.

3

Emily closed her eyes.

The memory of their first conversation in Chapter 1 – The Man with the Wedding Ring suddenly felt different.

Back then Daniel had seemed surprised by everything she said.

Now she wondered how much of that surprise had been acting.

“You lied to me from the beginning,” Emily said quietly.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t plan the affair,” Daniel insisted.

“But you knew who I was.”

“Only your name.”

Emily shook her head even though he couldn’t see her.

“That’s enough to change everything.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Emily, listen to me.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire is trying to twist this.”

“She didn’t twist anything,” Emily replied.

“You just confirmed it.”

4

Emily sat down slowly.

Her heart was racing too fast.

“Did she ask you to talk to me?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did she ask you to get close to me?”

“No.”

“Did she know you were going to?”

Another pause.

“That’s complicated.”

Emily laughed again.

“That means yes.”

Daniel sighed.

“No.”

“But she suspected I might.”

Emily froze.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s voice dropped slightly.

“Claire knows me very well.”

Emily felt something cold settle in her chest.

“So she predicted you would cheat with me.”

“She predicted I might notice you.”

Emily whispered,

“That’s insane.”

Daniel didn’t respond.

Because deep down, both of them knew something.

Claire didn’t seem like someone who guessed.

Claire seemed like someone who calculated.

5

Emily remembered something from Chapter 4 – The Rules Claire Set.

Claire had said something strange that night.

The beginning always tells you more than you think.

Emily suddenly realized what she meant.

The beginning had never been accidental.

“Daniel,” Emily said slowly.

“What?”

“Did Claire ever tell you why she mentioned me?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.”

Emily waited.

“She said you were interesting.”

Emily frowned.

“That’s all?”

Daniel’s voice grew quieter.

“No.”

“What else?”

“She said you were the type of person who hates lies.”

Emily felt her breath catch.

“Why would she say that?”

Daniel answered with uncomfortable honesty.

“Because she wanted to see how long it would take before you noticed one.”

6

Emily stared at the wall in silence.

Claire had been observing her long before the affair started.

Studying her.

Predicting her reactions.

Testing Daniel.

Testing her.

And somehow pulling both of them into the same trap.

“So this entire thing started as some kind of experiment,” Emily whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because it was starting to sound true.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another message.

From Claire.

Emily almost didn’t open it.

But curiosity won.

Claire:
Did you ask him yet?

Emily felt a chill.

She typed slowly.

Emily:
Yes.

The reply came instantly.

Claire:
And?

Emily looked at Daniel’s name still glowing on the call screen.

Then she typed the truth.

Emily:
He didn’t deny it.

7

Daniel heard the message arrive.

“Did she text you?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Emily didn’t answer.

Instead she asked another question.

“Daniel… what exactly does Claire want?”

He hesitated.

“I’m not sure anymore.”

“You used to be sure.”

“Yes.”

“What changed?”

Daniel sighed.

“You.”

Emily looked out the window.

“That sounds romantic.”

“It’s not meant to be.”

“Then what is it?”

Daniel spoke slowly.

“Claire likes patterns.”

Emily frowned.

“Patterns?”

“She believes people repeat behaviors.”

Emily remembered what Claire had said in Chapter 6 – The Night Claire Called.

People always repeat the same mistakes.

“Am I supposed to be a pattern?” Emily asked.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“No.”

“Then what am I?”

Daniel answered honestly.

“You might be the first time she’s wrong.”

8

Emily didn’t know whether to feel flattered or terrified.

Before she could answer, another message arrived.

Claire again.

Claire:
Did he tell you about the others?

Emily’s stomach tightened.

She remembered asking Daniel about that in the park the day before.

Too many.

Emily typed slowly.

Emily:
Yes.

Claire responded instantly.

Claire:
Then you understand why this is interesting.

Emily frowned.

Emily:
Interesting?

Claire’s next message came a few seconds later.

Claire:
Because you’re the first one he didn’t lie to.

Emily’s chest tightened.

She looked back at Daniel’s name on the phone.

“Did you ever tell the others you were married?” she asked quietly.

Daniel hesitated.

“No.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“So I’m special.”

Daniel answered honestly.

“Yes.”

9

Emily didn’t know if that made her feel better or worse.

Her phone buzzed again.

Claire.

Another message.

Claire:
Now you see the problem.

Emily typed.

Emily:
What problem?

Claire replied:

Claire:
If he’s honest with you…

A pause.

Then the final line appeared.

Claire:
That means he might actually love you.

Emily’s heart began beating faster again.

She whispered into the phone,

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“I think Claire wants that to happen.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“I know.”

Emily frowned.

“Why would she want that?”

Daniel’s voice turned darker.

“Because if I fall in love with you…”

Emily waited.

“And it still ends the same way…”

Emily felt a cold chill.

“What same way?”

Daniel answered with a sentence that made everything worse.

“The way it ended with the others.”

10

Emily gripped the phone tighter.

“What happened to them?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

Another long silence.

Then he said quietly:

“They left.”

“Because of Claire?”

“Because of the truth.”

Emily’s mind raced.

“What truth?”

Daniel hesitated again.

Finally he said:

“The one Claire always reveals in the end.”

Emily whispered,

“And what truth is that?”

Daniel exhaled slowly.

“That no one really wants the whole story.”

Emily felt the weight of that sentence settle in her chest.

Because she suddenly realized something terrifying.

She still didn’t know the whole story either.

And somewhere out there—

Claire was waiting for the moment she finally did.
