My heart was racing when we first met. I was new to the world and terribly nervous, yet you held me in your hands and made me feel that everything would be all right. I squirmed and wiggled, trying to break free, but you held me securely and gently, as though I was precious treasure. Then you brought me close to your chest, and I felt the calming rhythm of your heartbeat. In that moment, our heartbeats seemed to fall into sync, and I silently vowed to remain by your side forever.
When you took me to your home, you already had my food, toys, and bed picked out for me as if you knew I was going to be yours. For the first few weeks with you, I learned my schedule of when to eat, when to potty, and when to sleep. Often when I had too much energy, you took me out on walks to sniff the grass, listen to the birds, mark my favorite spots, and let the breeze blow through my fur. When I was bad, I felt your anger and disappointment, but you still offered me grace afterwards. When I was silly, you always joined in the fun so that we would be playful together.
Sometimes I stole your socks whenever you left for work because I hated watching you go. Other times, I pretended not to hear you when it was bath time. I once chewed through your favorite shoe and spent the entire day avoiding eye contact. I thought I could convince you of my innocence, and for a moment I did.
On our first anniversary together, you took me to the beach for the very first time. I ran along the shoreline, feeling my paws sink into the cool, wet sand. It was such a strange sensation, but I loved every second of it. I crept toward the water, only to jump back when the waves came crashing in. They frightened me for a moment. But then I looked up and saw the big smile on your face, and somehow I knew I was safe. With you beside me, there was nothing to fear.
Through the years, we grew older together as I remained by your side and you by mine. I memorized everything about you – your scent, your voice, your touch. I always felt the happiest when you were around but knew how to fix you when you weren’t feeling yourself.
Whenever you got your heart broken, I comforted you to let you know that my unconditional love was forever. Whenever you changed job to job, I stayed patient with you to let you know that we didn’t need all the money in the world to be happy together. When you stayed out late and stumbled home, I waited up for you hoping that you would come back safe. When you were feeling sick, I laid next to you so that you wouldn’t be alone.
When you got married, I was jealous and protective because I wanted all of your attention. I always thought it was just going to be you and me forever, but then a third entered our lives. It took me a while to warm up to him, but eventually I learned to love him just as you learned to love me. I became more and more comfortable with the new addition, and realized that life was better in a pack. If he made you happy, then that made me happy.
When you found out that you were going to have your own baby, I already knew. I sensed the life growing inside of you long before you did. Whenever you rested, I laid my head on your belly, feeling all three of our hearts syncing together. When the baby kicked your belly, I pressed my nose against it letting it know I was there too.
The years continued to pass, and you welcomed more babies into our pack. Our family grew and it made me so happy to see you enjoy new energy in our house. Although I moved slower and my once dark muzzle began to gray, I still enjoyed being with you and I was sure to let you know with a little wag of my tail.
I, too, enjoyed the little ones and felt it was my duty to protect them. When they cried, I comforted them with the touch of my nose. When they threw food on the floor, I was sure to clean up their mess. When they slept, I snuggled up to them to keep them safe. When they were too playful with me, I learned to be patient with them just as you were patient with me.
Life in our pack was never dull, and I loved every bit of it because I was with you. You always made sure I had a place on every family road trip, and somehow you never let a single family portrait feel complete unless I was there too. Through every holiday, every celebration, and every quiet in-between moment, we stayed side by side – and that togetherness meant everything to me.
As the babies grew taller, I began to slow down. My bones ached more often, and my sight gradually turned cloudy. Even though I always knew the sound of your voice, there were times when I could no longer hear it clearly. When I was younger, I loved sleeping right beside you. But as I grew older, I found comfort in a quiet, dark corner. Some nights I would forget where I was and wander aimlessly, and every time, you were there to gently guide me back to my bed and make me feel safe again.
Somewhere deep down, I knew my time was growing short. I tried with everything I had to hold on, because I wasn’t ready to leave my family. I wasn’t ready to leave you. From the moment we first met, I promised myself I would stay by your side. The thought of breaking that promise broke my heart. But no matter how badly I wanted to stay, I could feel my strength beginning to fade, and I no longer knew how much fight I had left in me.
The pain in my joints became too much for me to bear, so you always came to me. Although the cloudiness in my eyes prevented me from seeing your face, your scent still comforted me. I no longer heard familiar sounds, but your gentle touch always let me know you were near.
On our final day together, you took me to the beach one last time. We sat in the sand as you held me close to your heart, as if I was your first baby. While you stared at the sunset with tears streaming down your face, I tried to focus on you and let the comfort of your embrace console us both. You cried never wanting to let me go, while I was grateful to have lived the life you gave me. I didn’t want to leave you, but I knew I had to. My life was short, but I lived it to the fullest because of you.
I started to whimper as I drew my final breath, but your embrace tightened around me, and I felt your beating heart. With you beside me, there was nothing to fear. I remembered the day we first met. I vowed to remain by your side forever, and I intend to keep the promise. Whenever you find a piece of food on the floor, think of me. Whenever you visit the beach and find yourself smiling for no reason, think of me. Whenever you hear paws in the hallway and no one is there, think of me.
When I show up in your dreams, know that it was proof that I was with you.
Whenever you need me, I will always be there.
