When I met my husband, he took everything you said to him at face value and couldn’t really joke around. On the other end of the spectrum, my dad’s side of the family can be a little mean-spirited in their “jokes”. Therefore, I had to ease my husband into dealing with them. He is still a very sweet man, but when he does get into my family’s groove, boy, does he have some zingers.
Husband: *Watching our newborn sleep* “She keeps wanting the pacifier in her mouth and then spitting it out once she is asleep.”
Me: “My mom said I used to do that — called me a little minnow.”
Husband: “Typical. Your family tree would be closer to a fish than the rest of us.”
I am stunned for half a second before I find myself uncontrollably laughing.
Me: “You know, if you said that to anyone else, let alone a postpartum woman, they would burst into tears right now. That was very, very mean.”
Husband: *Rueful smile* “Then why are you laughing?”
Me: *Wheezing* “Because it was also really funny.”
It is always the quiet ones with the most wit.
